FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
‘Why do people seek counseling?
People come into counseling for many reasons. Some are challenged by unexpected, or ongoing, issues in their lives or relationships, some are facing stressful transitions, others seek self-awareness and personal growth. When facing stress, emotional issues, or relationship and marriage challenges, and when coping skills are overwhelmed by guilt, doubt, anxiety, or despair, counseling can help.
Counseling can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping skills for issues such as depression, anxiety, self-doubt, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, bereavement, spiritual conflicts, stress management, body image issues, career issues and financial stress. Counseling helps people find new perspectives, gain self-awareness and work towards change in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment.
What can I expect in a counseling session?
During counseling sessions we discuss the primary concerns and issues in your life. Typically, we will discuss your reason for coming, current situation and challenges, as well as your strengths and goals. Together we explore your feelings, needs and options as well as ways to cope with stress and whatever difficulties you might be facing.
Regular counseling sessions are 55 minutes; however, you have the option to schedule 75 minutes for couples counseling, EMDR sessions and other specialized work. Usually weekly or every other week counseling sessions are best.
During the time between counseling sessions it is beneficial to think about what was discussed. At times, you may be asked to take certain actions outside of the counseling sessions, such as reading, journaling, or making self-observations. In most cases, active participation, both inside and outside of the counseling sessions, increases the effectiveness of therapy.

What is the cost of counseling?
The standard rate for counseling sessions ranges from $100 to $150 per session. For counseling clients who wish to use insurance plans for their therapy, fees/copayments may vary depending on the specific insurance plan. A Good Faith Cost Estimate is available upon request. Please call for more information.
Do you accept insurance plans for counseling?
Yes, I accept most insurance and my office will file claims on your behalf. However, I am considered an out-of-network provider for most insurance plans. Please contact my office at 913-645-1236 or email [email protected] and we can explain how we may be able to work with your insurance plan.
If I do not formally participate in your insurance plan you may still be able to receive counseling insurance benefits. Most insurance policies will provide partial reimbursement for out-of-network service providers. In most cases, my counseling office can file the necessary paperwork with your insurance provider and you will simply pay your portion at your office visit. Alternatively, if you wish to file on your own, we will provide you with the appropriate documentation.
Regardless of insurance plans and benefits, clients are responsible for payment of fees or copayments at the beginning of each counseling session. Payment may be made by cash, check, credit card or HSA/FSA card.
